Web Hosting Price in Nepal: A Straight Breakdown of What Things Cost
Most hosting pricing pages show one number and leave out the rest. This is a full breakdown of what it costs to put and keep a website online in Nepal, including the items that usually appear only after you have committed.
Hosting
Shared hosting is the normal starting point for a business website, blog or portfolio. In Nepal you can expect roughly:
- Entry shared hosting: Rs 300–500 per month. Suits a brochure site, portfolio or small blog.
- Business shared hosting: Rs 500–900 per month. More storage and headroom, suits a busy WordPress site or a small online shop.
- VPS: Rs 1,500–5,000+ per month depending on CPU and RAM. Needed when you want root access, specific runtimes, or predictable performance under load.
Below about Rs 300 per month you are usually buying space on an overseas or heavily-shared server. That can be fine for a hobby project and is a poor fit for a business site.
Domain
This is billed yearly and is separate from hosting:
- .com.np, .org.np, .net.np: free. You register these yourself with the Nepali registry — see the .com.np process.
- .com: around Rs 1,500 per year.
- .org / .net: around Rs 1,600–1,700 per year.
- .io and other premium extensions: Rs 4,000+ per year.
Watch for renewal pricing here in particular. A domain advertised cheaply for the first year sometimes renews at several times that.
SSL certificate
This should cost you nothing. Let's Encrypt issues free, automatically-renewing certificates and every competent host supports them. Paid certificates only make sense for specific cases such as organisation-validated or extended-validation certificates, which most small sites do not need.
If a host charges a yearly fee for basic SSL, that is a margin decision on their side, not a technical requirement.
Mailboxes on your own domain are usually included with hosting. Budget separately only if you want Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, which run roughly Rs 800–1,200 per user per month.
For most small businesses in Nepal, the mailboxes included with hosting are sufficient.
The costs people forget
- Renewal increases. The most common surprise. Introductory pricing frequently rises at the first renewal. Ask for the renewal rate before you buy.
- Backups. Some hosts charge extra for backups or for restoring one. Confirm both are included.
- Migration. Moving an existing site should be free. Some providers charge per site.
- Dedicated IP. Rarely necessary now that SNI is universal. Do not pay for one unless you have a specific reason.
- Overage charges. Understand what happens if you exceed bandwidth or storage — some hosts throttle, some bill, some suspend.
A realistic first-year total
For a small business website in Nepal with local hosting, a .com domain, free SSL and included email:
- Hosting at Rs 400/month: Rs 4,800
- .com domain: Rs 1,500
- SSL: Rs 0
- Email: Rs 0 (included)
Total: roughly Rs 6,300 for the first year, or around Rs 525 per month all in. If you use a free .com.np domain instead, that drops to about Rs 4,800.
Paying annually rather than monthly typically saves 15–25%, and two- or three-year terms save more. Commit long-term only after you have tested the provider.
Where paying more is genuinely worth it
Spending more makes sense when it buys you something measurable: a server physically in Nepal rather than overseas, NVMe rather than spinning disks, self-service backups with real retention, and support staffed by people who can answer a technical question. Spending more on storage you will not use, or on SSL that should be free, is not.
Frequently asked questions
Why is hosting priced in USD by some Nepali providers?
Usually because they are reselling an overseas platform and their own costs are in USD. It also exposes you to exchange-rate movement at renewal. NPR pricing with local payment methods is simpler to budget for.
Is annual billing always cheaper?
Per month, yes, typically 15–25% less. But it also locks you in. For a provider you have not used before, a month or two of monthly billing is worth the small premium.
Do I pay separately for the control panel?
You should not. Some hosts pass on cPanel licence costs as a line item. Ask whether the panel is included.
