Domain Name Price in Nepal (2026): .com, .com.np, .np and the Rest

Domain pricing is one of the few genuinely simple things in hosting, and it is still where people get caught - usually by a first-year discount that triples on renewal, or by registering the wrong extension for their audience.
Here is what things cost and what to watch for.
Current prices
| Extension | Price at AstraCloud | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| .com.np | Free | Nepali businesses, organisations and shops |
| .np | Free | Nepali entities that qualify |
| .com | NPR 2,000 / year | Anything aiming beyond Nepal |
| .org | NPR 1,600 / year | Non-profits, communities, projects |
| .net | NPR 1,700 / year | Infrastructure and technical brands |
| .io | NPR 4,500 / year | Startups and developer tools |
Live pricing is on the domains page, and you can check whether a name is taken with the WHOIS lookup.
The .com.np question
Nepali domains under .com.np and .np are administered by Mercantile Communications on behalf of Nepal, and they are free - but not automatic. You have to prove you are entitled to the name, which in practice means submitting documents: company registration for a business, or a citizenship certificate and a relevant letter for an individual or organisation. Registration is manual and takes days rather than seconds.
That verification is exactly why a .com.np signals a real Nepali entity to visitors. It is also why the process trips people up. We walk through it step by step in how to register a .com.np domain, and we handle the paperwork for customers.
.com or .com.np?
Not actually a hard choice once you ask one question: who is your audience?
- Customers are in Nepal. .com.np is free, credible and a mild local search advantage. Take it.
- Customers are anywhere else. .com. A country extension quietly signals "this is not for me" to a foreign buyer.
- Both. Register both, run the business on the .com, and redirect the .com.np to it. The redirect is free to run and protects the name.
What you should not do is pick .com.np purely because it is free and then spend three years wishing you had the .com, only to find someone else registered it.
The renewal trap
The single most common way people lose money on domains: a registrar advertises a first year at a heavy discount and renews at several times that price. The first year is marketing; the renewal is the actual price.
Before you register anywhere, check three things:
- The renewal price, not the first-year price.
- Whether WHOIS privacy is included or billed separately every year.
- The transfer-out policy. Your domain should be yours to move, unlocked on request, no fee.
Our prices above are the same in year one and year five, WHOIS privacy is included where the registry supports it, and transfers out are unlocked on request.
Choosing the name itself
- Shorter is better, but clear beats short. If you have to spell it over the phone, it is wrong.
- Avoid hyphens and numbers. They get lost every time the name is spoken aloud.
- Check the social handles before you commit. A matching handle is worth more than a slightly better domain.
- Do not stuff keywords. best-cheap-hosting-nepal.com has not helped anybody rank since about 2012, and it reads as spam.
What a domain does not include
A domain is an address, not a place to live. It does not give you a website, email or storage - those come from hosting. A registered domain with no hosting shows nothing to visitors.
If you are starting from zero, the usual order is: register the domain, buy hosting from NPR 100 a month, point the domain at it, install WordPress or upload your site, and switch on the free SSL certificate. Our guide to making a website in Nepal covers the whole path.
Questions
How much does a .com domain cost in Nepal?
NPR 2,000 a year with us, at the same price on renewal. Watch for registrars whose first year looks cheaper and whose second year is not.
Is .com.np really free?
Yes, the registration itself is free. What it costs is paperwork and a few days of waiting for verification.
Can a foreigner register a .com.np domain?
The registry requires documents tying the applicant to Nepal, so in practice it is for Nepali individuals and registered entities. A foreign company with a registered Nepali presence can usually qualify.
Can I transfer my existing domain to AstraCloud?
Yes. Unlock it at your current registrar, get the authorisation code, and start the transfer. A transfer normally adds a year to the registration.
Do I need hosting from the same company as my domain?
No, and it is fine to split them. Keeping both in one place just means one renewal date and one place to fix DNS when something breaks.
